I am obsessed with two things.. folk tales, and the Decemberists. This was inevitable.

This illustration is based on the music, not the actual legend, but the story goes something like this: a poor man finds a wounded crane and nurses it back to health. It transforms into a beautiful woman, and they marry. The man was having a hard time of it financially, so the woman offers to make silk clothes for him. The clothes are ridiculously beautiful and sell really well. The man gets greedy after a while and starts forcing the wife to weave all the time. One night he comes across her weaving, and finds that she's actually putting her own feathers into the cloth to make it soft. He feels enormously guilty. But because he's seen her, the spell is broken, so she flies away.

And I will hang my head, hang my head low...

It must be based off of Suru no Ongaishi. One of my favorite Japanese folk tales. Slight differences, but still a lovely piece of art! Well done!

I read the story a different way when I was young, called 'Crane Maiden'. It was a Japanese legend about a poor old couple. One day the old man is out gathering wood in the snow when he finds a crane in a snare. Feeling sorry for the beautiful creature, he lets it free. The following night, a beautiful young woman comes to them out of the snow storm, seeking shelter. In exchange for a place to spend the night, she asks to use their loom--they must only promise not to look in on her as she weaves. They agree. In the morning, she has weaved for them a most beautiful cloth. When the old woman takes it to town to sell it, several wealthy men bid on the cloth, and the old woman walks away with more money than she's ever seen in her life. The following night, the woman weaves for them another cloth, for which the old woman gets another huge sum of money. By this time, the couple have become curious. The next night, the old couple look in on the woman as she is at the loom, only to find a crane at the loom, plucking the softest feathers from its breast to weave into cloth. Once they knew her secret, she had to leave.

Love your art work--this and the rest.

The two just go together beautifully, don't they? :) Love the picture. :+favlove:
