Part 2 of the project in my Fantasy and Scifi Illustration class - part one is Eagle Woman. This one is a "fiery fox sprite"...it was a little rushed, and I'm not as happy with it as I am with the eagle one. Conceptually, it stinks, but I went with what the cards gave me.
A lot of people in class asked if this was a vector image, which surprised me...I guess my painting style has gotten really flat. I've always preferred to paint cleanly, because I think that overdoing it on texture can obscure the line of the work...I like expressive line and positioning and composition, and texture is like dessert, a nice thing to put in at the end, ultimately an afterthought. But I think at times my style can be too clean. I look back at my older, grungier work and cringe. I was so aimless back then...I just tossed brushes around like they were candy from a float, without any thought to what the point of the image was.

I love the kabuki-ish style of makeup, and the geometric patterns on the wings look like they were loads of fun.
Yeah, the wings were a ton of fun to paint.
