jobs

Fri Jun 19, 2009, 12:11 PM

So I didn't get the job at Hasbro :( They sent me what is without a doubt the most polite rejection email I have ever received, but the end result is that I have to keep looking, and I'm already getting discouraged. Without that degree I'm basically unhireable. I need a big job, something published.

In the meantime, though, I'm going to work on my skill set. This is the summer where I'm going to get better at drawing animals. If I can do that, there's a whole new type of commissions I can do. :) Anyone got any good tips or tutorials on the subject, or artists I could look at? I'm probably going to take a trip to our local zoo and do some sketches at some point, and I have a handy skeleton visual aids folder already, but I can always use a little boost.

Commissions are coming along. I've got some really fun Avatar-related ones in the works. And that tutorial on the Clar is going up on my website pretty soon. Yaaaay.

Remember to check out the Thorns OC contest! (link below) I recently updated the Fashion and Hairstyles page with lots of designs, so if you're looking for ideas, check out our wiki. Entries are due by the 15th of July.

Wow I never knew degrees were worth anything artwise. ):

Thats too bad to hear about Hasbro, but nice that they were nice about it. And no, without the degree you're not unhireable, you just need to look elsewhere. You'll get your break, just keep working hard (im talking to myself too, lol)

About animals, I have nothing for yah,. but zoo trips are funnn! I wanna play my ocarina at the animals, see what reaction i get from them because being ejected from the zoo.

You can definitely get a job in the field without a degree. I know this for fact thanks to personal experience.

Chin up, and keep looking. You are very talented/skilled and if you can be loud enough about your competence and value, someone will scoop you up for it.

Don't give room for doubt :]

Don't worry too much about degree, honestly, it's skill over degree. Good luck, you're a talented artist, even if it takes longer than what you hoped, you'll find your dream job! :D

Art is only 5% talent and 95% sweat, work, frustration and tears
it just comes down to how bad you want it that's all

I know the feeling. I'm going to have the piece of paper, I'm not sure I'm going to have the skill. But that's up to me.

As far as drawing animals goes, I was gonna say the zoo, but ya beat me to the punch. :) The only thing I can think of is to try drawing the disney characters as well - it's interesting to see how they're constructed.

Are degrees all they're cracked up to be? Do employers really care THAT much about a piece of paper over clearly being able to do the job?.. I always wonder about this. Since I have 2 different kinds of animation diploma (not sure what that'd be like the equivalent of in America, but thats all I could really get here for what I do) and experience with ABC TV Australia (I had a TV animated segment on a show) and a contract job I did for Playboy.com. Other then that, I don't have a degree to show.

I was thinking of studying abroad but I'm not even sure if it'd really be worth the money in the end.. Was the no degree thing really their "official reason"?

Sucks to see you didn't get the job, but keep your chin up. Your art is fantastic and there's no doubt in my mind if you keep at it you will succeed.
