I accidentally the whole 5 years

Fri Aug 28, 2009, 2:32 PM

It's been 5 years since I joined deviantart with this account, as of august 30th! I remember it was `jasonvelocity who convinced me to join back when I was just getting interested in digital art. It was definitely one of the factors in my pursuing communication arts as a career, and my own style has evolved partially because of influences I've discovered on this site. I've also met a ton of friends here. All in all, it was a good move and I don't regret a thing ;)

Also I am surprised to find I'm almost at 400k pageviews O_O I won't offer a kiriban this time because I never end up having time to do them, but I wonder if the ding will coincide with my anniversary.

Still looking for somewhere to go once I leave college.. if I continue to improve I might (miiiight) be good enough to work for WotC, but I doubt they'd hire me right now. Still I think I could probably find work at a younger company. Trying to remain optimistic about it =p I can't really find a good way to work Thorns into my resume. Is it actual work or is it just the stuff of a hobby? I don't know.

Also, once I'm more freed up, I'm doing serious thinking about pursuing Madland in a formal way. My style has changed a lot since starting the comic, so I'd probably have to start over again, which I wouldn't mind too much. I'm still "mad" about the story (har har chuckles) maybe more so than any I've ever written, probably because I would get to draw a lot of kids fighting each other, monsters and dinosaurs, etc.

anyway that's all the news from the home front. back to work! :)

I actually think gaming has made me a better artist! It's certainly given me more material to work with and more inspiration to draw from. It was playing fantasy games that finally showed me what I wanted to do for my career :D (also brought my family closer together!)

sadly I don't meet many people who still play D&D.. they've moved on to flashier MMOs, which are so much less personal.

I would make a similar claim. Gaming also got me interested in history. In high school, it all seemed like such an abstract subject to me - a litany of dates and documents. Gaming made it "real" to me; I began to think of historical periods as possible settings for RPG adventures, and so I was inspired to do research about daily life, technology, fashion, philosophies, and so on. Gaming turned me into, if not a scholar, then at least a trivia-monger.

And I think that has influenced my artwork, in turn. It also always provides me with something to talk about with my older brother. :D

It always makes me sad to hear about people who have abandoned tabletop games for MMOs. I enjoy WoW, of course (and a few other MMOs I've sampled), but I really don't see them as a substitute for pen-and-paper games. The experience is completely different.

Aw, heck - come join our game sometime. ;)

Same here! I started doing research for my online RPG, and I learned about a bunch of different cultures and religions and political systems that I probably never would have learned otherwise. Wikipedia is pretty darn useful in that regard.

I was introduced to RP through WoW, actually, but eventually it had too many drawbacks and became frustrating. I moved on to play-by-post and D&D. It's such a rewarding hobby with SUCH a bad reputation for reasons I don't really understand.. I've had people tell me they think WoW is healthier than D&D! WoW, the game where people have starved to death in front of their computers! :O

I hope to get my future kids interested in D&D. It's a heck of a lot better than having them sit in front of the computer all day.

And haha, don't tempt me, the last campaign I was playing in died an untimely death as the result of schedule changes.. I've been DMing a solo game for my fiance but I keep wanting to jump in and fight! :P

It's funny that people say that sort of thing. The running joke is that D&D is for socially-crippled people who live in their mother's basement, but the game is *based* on the idea of face-to-face social interaction and cooperative storytelling. I don't get that at all. And my brother-in-law and his family all play WoW obsessively, but I suspect they'd look at me funny if I started talking about my gaming hobby... :D

If my wife and I ever have kids, it's my hope that they'll enjoy RPGs, too. As it is, I'm helping my best friend to get his twin sons into them, and I'll probably try and run something for my nephew and niece, too. They're a little younger than the old D&D set's suggested age (the box says 'Ages 10 and up' and they're 8, but so long as you go into it with the right expectations, it still works).

I am jealous that you're running something for your fiancee, though. I've wanted to run a solo game for my wife, but I think she prefers to play with a group rather than one-on-one. I guess I should be thankful that she enjoys playing at all! :)

It's a bit hard to do, as I keep having to introduce NPCs to balance it out, and he can't accomplish as many epic things as I'd like just yet. To make up for it I'm leveling him up once per encounter :P It's a little cheaty.

Hey, if you do individual pieces for your larger Thorns project, and you feel those pieces are good enough to show off, why not include them? I include artwork of OCs in my portfolio (although I haven't made an RPG based on any of them).

Here's to hoping we'll both end up working for WotC someday. It's always been a very nerdy dream of mine to illustrate Magic cards. ^^;
